Frog Information :

The frog is an amphibian and also vertebrates, this means they have a backbone. Frogs are cold blooded which means there body temperature is the same as the outside temperature. Frogs absorb water into there body through there skin so they don't have to drink water. They have very strong back legs which enable them to jump great distances.

Habitat:

Frogs can be found anywhere in the world apart from Antarctica. Most frog species are found in tropical regions. Frogs are always found near places that have water nearby. Some frogs don't go in the water and spend most of their lives on land. Some frogs even live in trees, such as the Tree Frog. Tree frogs have sticky pads on their fingers to help them climb trees.

Other frogs live in burrows and only leave these burrows during or after rain at the start of mating season. Burrower frogs have shorter hind legs than other species meaning they cannot hop. Frogs that live in colder places of the world hibernate through winter, burying living in a pond or burying themselves in mud in a pond or marsh.
Why not create your own frog habitat.
All you will need is a pond, approximately 1m x 1m with a minimum depth of 60cm, A deeper part in the pond is excellent for keeping tadpoles cool. Also its better to create your frog pond in a shaded area of your garden, e.g.. under a tree, near bushes or plants. Creating a pond for frogs will help to control the amount of bugs and pests in your garden as they make a tasty snack for a frog!

Diet; Food and eating habbits:

Frogs have big eyes on the top of their head, allowing them to see 360° around them. Frogs eat other animals, mostly bugs and worms. This helps humans as frogs control the amount of insect pests. Larger species of frogs such as the African bullfrog will try to eat practically anything, other frogs, fish, larger bugs, reptiles and mammals.

Predators:

Frogs are hunted by foxes, birds, rats, fish, raccoons, snakes,, bats and even humans. Much like other animals humans are destroying frogs habitats and breeding places by building houses, cities, shops, farms and roads. This creating a shrinking number of frogs worldwide with some species even becoming extinct.

Social Structure:

After the eggs hatch they turn into tadpoles, you'll often find these in the hundreds in a pond (depending on pond size this number may vary), all swimming together. They then Grow into adult frogs, and will move onto new ponds because a single pond is not big enough to house dozens of frogs. Perhaps 6-10 frogs will stay in the same pond where they where born (Again depending on the pond size).

Birth, Offspring:

Frogs lay eggs called frog spawn. Frog spawn turns into tadpoles. Tadpoles live their life in the water until metamorphosis's into adults. During metamorphosis the frog will re-absorb its tail and grow legs, large hind legs and smaller front legs.

Attributes:

Most frog species have large powerful hind legs which enable them to jump and hop over great distances. Frogs have teeth, unlike toads, this is one of the difference between frogs and toads. They also have long tongues to catch food with. Their tongues can be aimed accurately at great speed to catch a fly. Also another addition to a frog is its big eyes on the top of it's head which allows it to see what's going on in-front, beside or behind him, all the time - 360º.

Fun Facts:

  1. Frogs have huge hind legs for great jumping.
  2. Frogs have big eyes which allow great vision at 360º
  3. Frogs absorb water through their skin, so they don't need to drink.
  4. A difference between toads and frogs, frogs have teeth!
