Toad Information :

A toad is an amphibian similar to the frog which means they live half their life in water and the other half on land. Toads have warts on their skin and long sticky tongues. Behind their eyes they have poison glands. They vary in size depending on species but females are larger than males. The biggest toad is the Cane Toad which can weigh up to 4 pounds and 9" in length!

Habitat:

Toads can be found all over the world. They prefer wet areas and can stay under water for long periods by absorbing oxygen through their skin. A toad will hibernate in winter by burying itself in mud or in cracks under leaves.

Diet; Food and eating habbits:

Toads eat small animals such as insects, spiders, worms and bugs. They hunt at night for food and use their sticky tongue as a trap to catch food. Some giant toads can eat mice and small water snakes.

Predators:

Common toads secrete an irritant substance from their skin, helping protect themselves from predators. A few of the toads predators such as grass snakes and hedgehogs are not discouraged with their meal by the irritant.

Social Structure:

Most toads communicate to each other by forcing air through their vocal chords which produces a distinctive sound. Males are much louder than females as they have a vocal sac.

Birth, Offspring:

Being amphibians, toads return to the water where they lay their eggs. When toad eggs hatch into tadpoles, they breathe with gills and swim using a tail. Once matured, they lose their tail, and develop lungs for breathing air.

Attributes:

Toads don’t have any bones between the mouth and eyes, when food is swallowed it forces the eye to be pushed to the roof of the mouth so it makes the toad blink.

Fun Facts:

  1. Toads cannot give you warts.
  2. A difference between frogs and toads, toads do not have teeth.
  3. A toads skin is dry but frogs skin is wet
