Chickens Information :

A chicken is a domesticated bird. They are raised for providing two types of food, their meat, commonly known as chicken and their eggs. In 2003 there was nearly 25 billion chickens, there are more chickens worldwide than any other bird. A male chicken is called a Rooster and a female chicken called a Hen.

Habitat:

A chicken in the wild would be found living in grassy plains. They are found in numerous places around the world such as America, Europe, Asia and China.
Chickens are more commonly found in captivity where they are farmed for their meat and eggs. is the name given for a chicken that is kept in a cage laying eggs all it's life.

Diet; Food and eating habbits:

A domestic chicken is normally fed on a prepared feed which contains a protein source as well as grain. Wild chickens would scratch at the floor looking for insects and bugs to eat.

Predators:

Chickens in the wild have many predators. If a carnivore is big and fast enough to keep up and kill the chicken, it will. The most known predators are Foxes, cats, Raccoons, snakes, and Hawks.
Domestic chickens are kept in large huts or barns which are normally safe from such predators. Although its not unknown for a keeper to find a chicken that has been killed by a fox.
Humans are big predators of chickens because we keep them for the purpose of eating them, approximately 50 billion chickens are slaughtered each year, these are known as robot chickens

Social Structure:

Chickens live together in a flock. They have a communal approach to the incubation of eggs and raising of younger chickens. Chickens have dominant individuals in there flocks, knowns as pecking orders, where certain chickens will have priority for access to food and nesting locations.

Birth, Offspring:

The male rooster lowers the wing closest to the female hen and runs around in circles. Once the hen has warmed to the call of the rooster fertilisation can take place.
After the eggs have been laid the chicken will sit on them and only leave for food and water.
The hen must keep the eggs at a constant temperature, this is called incubation.
Incubation lasts on average for 21days until the eggs hatch.

And the question of the day is :)
What came first the chicken or the egg

Attributes:

A chicken has very sharp claws and a sharp beak. Chickens beaks are often trimmed to a safer length so they aren't so dangerous. This won't stop fighting between rival chickens but can help prevent serious injuries and death.
