Butterfly Information :

Butterflies evolve from Caterpillars. They are beautiful insects that fly using their large scaly butterfly wings. Like all insects they have six jointed legs 3 body parts, a pair of antennae, compound eyes, and an exoskeleton. These three body parts are the head, thorax (the chest), and abdomen (the tail end).
The term Lepidoptera, which means "scaled wings" refers to butterflies and moths. Butterflies and moths are arthropods and insects.

Habitat:

Butterflies live primarily on nectar from flowers. A butterfly can also be found nourishing from pollen, tree sap, rotting fruit, dung, and dissolved minerals in wet sand or dirt.
If you want to find butterfly's you can look for them near damp patches, dung, rotting fruit or carcasses to obtain the essential minerals that they need.
Create your own Butterfly Garden
Here are some tips to create your own butterfly habitat.!

  • You’ll need larval plants for caterpillars and nectar plants for butterflies.
  • Choose plants that vary in colour and that have different blooming periods, this will help attract butterflies all summer long.
  • Some recommended plants are: Milkweed, Sedum, Zinnia, Yarrow, Thistles. the butterfly bush, the beauty bush, sunflowers, lilacs, snapdragons, and zinnias. Visit your local nursery for more advice on which plants attract butterflies.

Diet; Food and eating habbits:

Butterflies survive on "nectar" plants, some nectar plants are the butterfly bush, the beauty bush, sunflowers, lilacs, snapdragons, and zinnias. They can be found searching for nectar plants near damp patches, dung, rotting fruit and carcasses.

Predators:

Butterfly's are defenceless insects and very fragile. Their main predators include birds, spiders, reptiles and other insects.
Butterflies depend highly on their ability to camouflage within plants.
Some butterflies look like dead leaves (like the Indian leaf butterfly), others look like the bark of a tree (e.g., the carpenter moth).
Some butterflies are poisonous. When a predator such as a bird eats one of these butterflies it will become sick and vomit. Thanks to this one butterfly, the predator will have learnt a valuable lesson and won't eat any more of it's kind again.

Social Structure:

Once a caterpillar has evolved into a butterfly the butterfly will survive on it's own, often appearing to 'play' with other butterflies, whether they are playing or just simply flying this is unknown.
Tip: Why not watch some butterflies to study how they live, you could use a pen and paper to draw them if you wish!

Birth, Offspring:

Butterflies lay their eggs on plants which caterpillar (when hatched) will feed on.
It varies which part of the plant butterflies lay their eggs, this can range from the top to bottom of a leaf, stalks or the flower.

Attributes:

Butterflies use their antennae for sensing air for scents, wind and nectar. The antennae come in various shapes and colours. The hesperids have a pointed angle or hook to the antennae.
