Bats Information :

Bats are the only mammals that can fly. There are lots of different types of bats from the tiny bumblebee bat to the huge flying fox with a wingspan as long as a person.
In fact, there are nearly a thousand different types of bats and they make up one fifth of the world's mammals.

Habitat:

The place where a bat sleeps is called its roost. Most bats live in caves where they sleep during the day. In Some caves their are thousands of bats. The largest bat colony in the world is in Bracken Cave, Texas. This cave is home to as nearly 20 million free tailed bats.
Bats also live in tree tops, under bridges and in old buildings. Bats can be found in most parts of the world in cities and countryside.

Diet; Food and eating habbits:

Most bats eat fruit but some species of bats eat insects and small frogs and vampire bats feed on blood from large animals like cows or horses. They pierce through their skin with sharp teeth then drink about an ounce of blood.

Predators:

Bats have few predators but if they are ever caught the culprits would include owls, raccoons, snakes and cats.

Social Structure:

Bats vary in social structure, with some bats leading a life of solitude and others living in caves with more than a million bats.
Scientists have found that bats make all kinds of sounds to communicate with others. Whilst studying bats they have been able to identify sounds made associated with certain behavior.

Birth, Offspring:

During spring, bats return from migrating or wake up from hibernation and the females begin having babies. Bats usually have one pup at a time but can sometimes have two. Bats are nursed by their mothers milk like all mammals.

Attributes:

Instead of relying on their sense of sight for night time vision, bats make high pitched squeaks called ultrasounds. These sounds are too high for most people to hear but if these sounds hit something it echoes. The bat hears the echo and can tell where the object is. This clever skill is called echo location. Not every species of bat is able to echo locate, but most can.

Fun Facts:

  1. The term blind as a bat is not true as they are not blind.
  2. Bats have the best hearing of all land mammals.
  3. You could try building a bat house
