Monkey Information :

Monkeys are one of the most popular animals. A monkey is a long-tailed, medium-sized primate. Primates are animals that have clasping hands, forward facing eyes and highly developed brains. The primate order also includes macaques, baboons, guenons, capuchins, marmosets, and tamarins. There are new world monkeys and old world monkeys

 

Habitat:

Some monkeys spend the majority if their lives in treetops, while others call flatter savannas and grasslands home. Most monkeys prefer warm climates like central and south America, Africa and Asia.

Diet; Food and eating habbits:

Most monkeys survive of a diet of fruit, leaves, nuts, berries, eggs, insects and occasionally other smaller animals.  

 

Predators:

The biggest threat to monkey is loss of habitat. Animals that hunt monkeys include wild cats, birds of prey and snakes. In some parts of the world humans hunt monkeys for food, clothing and even hunted for sport.  

 

Social Structure:

Monkeys are amongst the most social of mammals. They live in family groups and form large troops as well.  

 

Birth, Offspring:

Monkeys give birth to one infant after around five months gestation. They reach sexual maturity at various ages dependant on breed.  

 

Attributes:

Monkeys are extremely intelligent and studies show they can grasp math concepts. They communicate vocally and through gestures which require intellect.  

 

Fun Facts:

  1. Primate researchers have discovered that Japanese macaques can acquire different accents based on where they live just like humans.
  2. Chimpanzees and apes are not classed scientifically as monkeys despite popular belief.
