Lizard Information :

Lizards are from the reptile family. They are cold blooded animals with a long tail, and four legs. Approximately 2,500 different species of lizards roam planet earth with only two of these species being poisonous.
Lizards can vary in size with the very small gecko lizards that are less than three inches long, to the huge sized Komodo dragon which can reach over three meters in length.

Lizard's come in a variety of shapes and colours. For example the horned lizard has a distinctive horny skin.

Small Lizards are kept as pets, Popular pet lizards include iguana and bearded dragon lizard.

 

Habitat:

The majority of lizards live on the ground or in the lows of trees however many species of lizards live in deserts, and other varieties reside in temperate forests, rainforests, prairies, marshes and streams, subterranean burrows, rocky outcrops.

The glider lizards live in the leafy tops of trees. Pet lizards are kept in a tank, usually heated indoors.

Diet; Food and eating habbits:

Small lizards generally eat insects and bugs but larger types will eat small animals including other lizards.
Pet Baby lizards will not readily eat on their own. Baby lizards eat Wax worms gradually building up to small crickets. 

 

Predators:

Predators include Raptors and birds of prey. Humans are also a threat as they have been killed to be made into wallets and for food in some cultures.  

 

Social Structure:

If kept as a pet, owners should avoid keeping different types together due to risk of territorial displays and fighting.  

 

Birth, Offspring:

Most lizards lay eggs in a nest, although some types will give birth to live young after the eggs have hatched inside her. A female will not nurse her young like other animals.  

 

Attributes:

When under attack from a predator, a lizard can detach it's tail, this distracts the predator with it's movement allowing the lizard to escape.
Lizards move in remarkable ways. Most lizard species are capable of running, climbing, and clinging, except for the few burrowing species whose legs are tiny or altogether lacking. A few species of monitors are capable of swimming, and they sometimes navigate from one island to another nearby.
